Rrose Pixel (www.macasev.com/rrosepixel) is a digital presentation of LGBT-related artwork by Aleksandar Maćašev from 1995 to 2003. The presentation was originally shown in galleries, although most of its content was available online. Through its interface elements and design Rrose Pixel also deals with the issues of constructed identity. The title is a combination of two elements: Rrose Sélavy, the female alter ego of Marcel Duchamp, and Black Pixel which was the author’s main website (www.the-mighty.com). You can also change the cursor from the default white/male to female, black, gay…
The presentation contains seven artworks. The earliest ones (1995-1998) are mainly paintings and drawings of male body. His work after the year 2000 is mostly web-based (websites, Flash animation, wallpapers, web banners…) These artworks use parody and humor in order to challenge identity stereotypes, and the deomocratic and rhizome-like nature of the Internet enables avoiding the usual centers of power and repression.
