By organizing different cultural events and activities – Femix Fest, concerts, exhibitions, music, film and poetry nights, workshops and lectures Femix wants to create a model for a gender equal, active and creative society. Femix was founded in 2010. as one of the Organization for promoting activism OPA’s programs, focusing on gender equality and art. The program tends to enlarge female activity, visibility and position on the scene, and help women and girls enthusiastic about creative expression to affirm their interests, through personal and professional development. We believe that after initial push(es), through time, and emerging, developing role models, more female artists will spontaneously arise.
Why are we fighting for women in arts? In the span of five years, from 2009. to 2013., out of all the acts featured on prominent European and Serbian festivals around 12% included female authorship. On some of the “end of year” charts in 2014. in Serbia there were more than a half of male acts (without any female members). The situation is not much better when it comes to film either – over 70% of films that were screened on important Serbian film festivals in 2015. were directed exclusively by men. The aim of our activities is to change this situation and create more space for creative women!
Every year, we publish a compilation of songs with female authorship from Serbia – Femixeta (http://www.femix.info/femixfm/femikseta/ www.femixeta.bandcamp.com). Genres vary from punk and alternative to Americana and instrumentals. The songs are selected by an established female musician from the independent scene, different one each year, and each Femixeta’s visual identity is created by a different young female designer. Finally, Femix works on promoting gender equality in general in Balkans` societies through participating in different events on this topic, and by offering our help and expertise.
